This is my current obsession, and may replace not only Nausicaä as my favorite all-time manga but Cowboy Bebop as my favorite all-time anime (the manga's finished, but the anime has aired 27 of a probable 78 episodes). After finishing the epic and poignant manga I was finally presented with something worthy of challenging Nausicaä's brilliance, something that hasn't happened since I finished that Hayao Miyazaki masterpiece years ago.

Anyways, Monster is a detective mystery/horror/drama about a Japanese doctor named Kenzou Tenma with high ideals and morals working in Germany. He begins to however discover the horrors of the politics behind his hospital, and when he is forced to choose between saving the life of a young boy who was brought in before the mayor of the town he chooses the boy. However, as his medical career begins to go down the tubes the enemies he made in the hospital begin to mysteriously die...until he is the only left of worthy position, and is promoted to the director of surgery. 9 years later, he discovers that his choice to save that boy may have prolonged the life...of a monster. Now he is willing to give up everything to atone for this mistake, even if it means hunting down and ending a life he once saved.

At 18 volumes and a potential 78 episodes, it's an epic story of massively epic proportions. The mystery behind Johan is blood-chilling, and truly he is the scariest villain I have ever seen. Tenma is such an honorable character to root for, and his journey to hunt down Johan is just amazing. I can't recomend it enough. Whether it's the anime or manga...check it out!

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Edited by: SSJNate at: 11/10/04 12:41 pm

Its not liscensed and if it were there is a good chance Anime-Kraze or Soldats would continue to sub it since both sub licensed anime. For how good this series is, their really isn't alot of people DLing it as I thought there would be. Thats a good thing in that in decreases the likely hood that it will get licensed. I really wish anime sites would stop showing the number of total DL an anime episode is getting. It just increases the likely hood of a anime title being liscensed if its being DL alot. Just wait until Bleach gets licensed right away.

Anyway Monster is a great series and was the best to come out of the new anime last season along with Gantz. Great anime.

Ohh and bye the way I started a monster thread already Nate

This is a really good show. It puts anything on TV(animated or live) to shame.

Working on this one now. I've only seen one episode, so I haven't quite gotten into it yet. The art style is hard for me to get used to, but I try to not let that sway me from watching something if it's got a good plot. =)

I'll move this thread to its proper section later.

I guess the art takes a little time to get used to...Urasawa has a nack for big noses, it seems.

Actually, I'm also reading 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa as well...and, let me tell you, that man knows how to put in plot twists in a manga. I mean, Monster was great, buth 20thCB is just crazy! Both have a terrible case of "Just one more chapter!" syndrome, in which every chapter ends with you wanting to read the next one, and so on until you realize you've been reading for 10 hours straight.

I think around Monster 4 or 5 the story starts to show its true colors...when you finally get to see Johan in all his glory for the first time :D

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

It must be pretty good to knock off Cowboy Bebop. That show is good on so many levels.

"God's in his heaven and all is right with the world"
- Nerv
Tenchi Muyo, No Need for a Homepage

I've seen up to number four, and it's getting really interesting. I'm actually going to stop watching it until I get most of this semester's work done because I like to watch straight. Currently I plan to stick with Bleach on Tuesday/Wednesdays, Naruto on Thursday/Friday, Naruto Manga on Friday/Saturday. One chapter/episode at a time. >_> Speaking of which, I have to get working.

Well I watched 12 episodes of this yesterday and.... I loved it. The story actually makes you think and feel for the characters. It's another series that I'm going to stick with to see where it's going. Now I watch Naruto, Bleach, Monster and I'm starting on Prince of Tennis (this should take a while).

If you are not following the monster series you are a fool.

When Tenma is pointing the sniper rifle at Johan and Johan slowly turns his head and looks right back at Tenma with just an evil stare through the target sites - it might be one of the best anime scenes of all time. I can't really think of a better one right now.

Johan just freaks me out. Best Villian of all time so far hands down with out question.

This series might just be my favorite of all time. Very very well written.
